Hope all enjoyed an extra day off on Friday! Happy Veteran's Day to all our vets and thank you for your service to our country. It was great to meet with many of you last week at conferences. I am confidient we are going to have a great second quarter in 7th grade!
In Math this week, students will be doing a project calculating percent of decrease using ads from the Sunday paper. This will be graded using the IB rubric (A. Knowledge and Understanding and D. Application to real life). We will also discuss how to calculate markups and markdowns (discounts), sales tax, tip, and simple interest. All concepts lend itself to real-life situations so if you are at the store with your child ask them about taking 20%, 30% or 50% off an item. Homework will be given Monday-Thursday and please make sure your child is working through their Khan Academy folders.

I am so happy to be working with your child in math this year. All have proven their hard work and capabilities and I am excited as we move into new content area next quarter. As we close out the first quarter and begin the second I wanted to let you know what we have completed in each grade as well as the standards and material we will be covering this second quarter.
In seventh grade we completed our first unit called The Number System where we covered topics on adding and subtracting integers, multiplying and dividing integers, and rational numbers (standards 7 .NS.1,2,3). We are now in our second unit, Ratios and Proportional Relationships, where we are beginning to cover rates, ratios and proportionality (standards 7.RP.1,2,3 and 7.EE.2). Toward the end of the second quarter we will begin studying our third unit where we will observe, examine, and solve expressions and equations (7.EE.1 and 4). Along with every unit I assign a folder of different Khan Academy modules that they should be working on. Your child is allowed to work on Khan Academy at home by logging in using their CPS email accounts (make sure they login using the Google button). Each folder is due upon the completion of our unit. This date will always be posted on my classroom homework board. Thank you again for all your help and cooperation ensuring your child has a successful year in math. |
